OPALINE // CONCEPTUAL PROJECT

Design-forward, eclectic lighting at an affordable price point.

Overview

Opaline is a conceptual e-commerce lighting brand designed to highlight lighting as both functional necessity and design expression. Created for homeowners, design enthusiasts, and shoppers seeking character-driven pieces, Opaline offers a curated selection that balances atmosphere, style, and accessibility. With a focus on warm aesthetics and thoughtful storytelling, the brand positions lighting not just as product, but as a way to spark conversation and shape ambiance within the home.

As a case study project, the brief was to design an e-commerce platform that prioritizes usability while differentiating from established competitors. The process included a competitive audit, user personas, sitemap, wireframes, and an email blast, all working together to inform the brand’s design system and digital experience. The final prototype emphasized intuitive navigation, clear product details, and trust-building elements, creating a shopping journey that feels seamless, reliable, and visually engaging.

USER PERSONAS
Illuminating insights.

Creating these personas helped uncover the unique goals and challenges of Opaline's audience, from the Stylish Homemaker seeking curated conversation pieces, to the Design Enthusiast sourcing bold statement lighting, to the Practical Aesthetic Seeker balancing value with quality. Together, these profiles represent the diverse ways our customers shop, make decisions, and engage with e-commerce sites. Grounding the design process in their needs directly resulted in a website experience that feels tailored, trustworthy, and engaging.

SITEMAP
The framework behind the flow.

To establish clear navigation and information hierarchy, a sitemap was created that organizes Opaline’s product categories, content, and utility pages. The structure prioritizes intuitive browsing by separating indoor, outdoor, and specialty lighting while keeping key actions like cart and account easily accessible.

The sitemap also ensures that navigation patterns feel predictable, reducing friction and helping users build trust as they move deeper into the site. This clarity in information architecture supports both new visitors exploring for inspiration and returning customers seeking efficiency.

Interact with this Figma prototype by expanding the frame. You can just tap and drag elements on mobile. Many elements are interactive.

CHECKOUT FLOW
Linear, simple design.

The checkout experience was designed to feel simple, transparent, and easy to follow. By simplifying the process into manageable steps, the design reduces abandonment risk while accommodating users with varying levels of digital confidence. Accessibility considerations, such as clear labels and logical sequencing, further supported a frictionless experience.

SEASONAL EMAIL BLAST
Branded coziness delivered right to your inbox.

To extend the brand beyond the website, a seasonal email blast was designed introducing Opaline’s winter edit. The goal was to highlight curated collections in a way that felt inspiring yet shoppable, bringing warmth and personality to the inbox. The layout emphasized bold imagery, concise copy, and clear calls-to-action, making it easy to scan and act on—particularly for users browsing quickly on mobile.

As part of the larger user journey, the email was designed to connect seamlessly with the site experience. By aligning tone, hierarchy, and navigation patterns, it reinforced brand recognition and reduced cognitive effort as users moved from inbox to store.
